27.03.2012 - AT&T Says Throttling of Unlimited Data Users Done on Case-by-Case Basis

Designer iPhone 4 Cases , a firestorm erupted over the publicization of AT&T policies that can result in users on grandfathered unlimited data plans seeing their data speeds throttled after burning through as little as 2 GB in a month.

Early reports on the policy, which went into effect last October as intended to affect the top 5% of users on unlimited plans, had pegged the carrier as enforcing throttling on customers using in excess of 10 GB, but the limit appears to have been coming down over time. The lower limits have left some wondering why they are continuing to pay for a $30/month "unlimited" data plan that is throttled after 2 GB while iPhone 4S Cases  happily sells customers a 3 GB "limited" data plan for the same price.

AT&T does note in a support document on its website that that top 5% of data users did average approximately 2 GB per month as of last August, although that number does vary month-to-month and market-to-market.

Data consumption by all customers, including the top five percent of smartphone data customers, varies by month and by market. As of August 2011, the average data use across the country by the top five percent of AT&T smartphone customers was 2GB per month.

AT&T is not, however, automatically throttling users on unlimited data plans once they reach that "top 5% level" in the neighborhood of 2 GB, as The New York Times reports that AT&T only throttles these customers when they reside in areas with shortages of network capacity.

[AT&T spokesman Mark] Siegel said that even if you do exceed 2 gigabytes of data usage and qualify as one of the top 5 percent, that doesn’t absolutely mean you’re going to be throttled. Gucci iPad 3 Case  will only reduce speeds for the top 5 percent of users in areas where network capacity or spectrum is insufficient, he said. In other words, throttling is done on a case-by-case basis, not based on a hard number, according to AT&T’s claims.

“There’s a very good chance you wouldn’t be slowed,” Mr. Siegel said. He added that in the last month, less than 1 percent of AT&T smartphone customers were affected by the policy.

Still, AT&T hasn't addressed observations that "unlimited" data users are essentially receiving less data service than 3 GB "limited" data users are for the same price. While unlimited customers can technically continue to go beyond 3 GB without incurring extra charges as a customer on a limited plan would, AT&T's throttled speeds are generally so low as to be considered nearly unusable by many.

Ultimately, many users of the users still on AT&T grandfathered data plans are viewing enforcement of throttling at 2 GB as primarily an effort to force them into giving up their plans and converting to the tiered plans AT&T rolled out in 2010.

6.08.2011 - Analyst: OS X and iOS to become one in 2012

It all started with the original iPhone, the phone that changed it all due (to a large part) to a modified OS X version which didn even have a name of its own back in January of 2007. Four years later we have Mac App Store, Apple online bazaar for Mac software, and Lion, the latest Mac operating system with iPad-like gestures, full screen apps and instant-on performance. What happens next year is Apple merges OS X and iOS into a single operating system, Jefferies & Co. analyst Peter Misek tells Barron:

We believe Apple is looking to merge iOS (iPhones/iPads) with OS X (Macs) into a single platform for apps and cloud services starting in 2012-13.

Misek says Apple will kickstart the transition with a 2012-2013 MacBook Air, and complete the switch by 2016 with the Mac Pro and iMac family. He is speculating that a next-generation MacBook Air will run Apple quad-core A6 chip, turning the company into ?EM style="PADDING-BOTTOM: 0px; BORDER-RIGHT-WIDTH: 0px; FONT-STYLE: italic; MARGIN: 0px; PADDING-LEFT: 0px; OUTLINE-WIDTH: 0px; PADDING-RIGHT: 0px; FONT-FAMILY: inherit; BORDER-TOP-WIDTH: 0px; BORDER-BOTTOM-WIDTH: 0px; FONT-SIZE: 15px; VERTICAL-ALIGN: baseline; BORDER-LEFT-WIDTH: 0px; PADDING-TOP: 0px">the first such multi-device platform capable of PC-like strength?/EM>. Of course, wee head rumors about Apple testing an ARM-based MacBook Air and other analysts have called for ARM-based Macs in 2012. Misek thoughts also correspond with Jean-Louis Gass interesting observation that Apple-designed chips based on ARM blueprints and ultra-thin MacBook Air designs are the future of Macs. But what are the benefits of merging OS X and iOS into a unified operating system?

According to Misek, itl help Apple negotiate more favorable and broader licensing agreements related to streaming premium entertainment content to people using their mobile devices and computers. sers want to be able to pick up any iPhone, iPad, or Mac (or turn on their iTV) and have content move seamlessly between them and be optimized for the user and the device currently being used. We believe this will be difficult to implement if iOS and OS X are kept separate?/EM>, the analyst argues. We add that a unified platform would greatly expand the addressable market for developers who no doubt be required to learn new tools in order to write universal apps that scale cleverly from the iPhone screen to the 27-inch iMac. The process is already underway, mind you. At this year WWDC, one of the sessions included new ways of constructing interfaces in third-party Mac software. The process calls for advanced padding relations between the individual user interface elements that ensure apps look great regardless of the user screen resolution.

Finally, this idea of OS X/iOS merger shouldn be viewed as outrageous. When Steve Jobs in March of 2001 introduced Mac OS X v10.0 code-named Cheetah ?the company initial version of the software for public consumption ?he dubbed it Apple new operating system or the next decade?/EM>. Well, that decade has passed and if history is any indication, Apple will reboot OS X and its users will once again participate in a major transition. Let not forget that Microsoft too is moving towards a single operating system ?Windows 8 ?said to scale from smartphones to tablets to desktop computers and servers while supporting both ARM and x86 architectures.iPhone 4 Cases|iPhone 4 Covers|Designer iPhone 4 Cases
